I was the last of seven born to Mat and Maxine Poole. My arrival on August 16, 1943 was unique only to the extent I was the only one of the seven born in a hospital. I grew up in southwest Arkansas. I’m married to Thelma since March 25, 1965 and we have two children, seven grands, and one great-grand. Most of what I have written to date relative to the “Mama Said” project relates to the people pictured in the photo albums elsewhere on this site.
The “Mama Said” project refers to a collection of short stories I have either already written or at least have put into an outline to be written. My process has been to take a well known family legend of the sort that gets repeated over and over at every family gathering and expand on it until it is a 1200 to 4000 word short story.
After an extensive family survey of all those family legends, I was able to compile a list of one line descriptions of about 100 possible story ideas. My very helpful brothers and sisters pictured in the photo albums elsewhere on this site supplied me with the details to go along with most of the 100. As an example, one item on the list was stated simply as “Florene’s Mop”. Since I had heard this story and told it myself many times to friends and coworkers, it was easy for me to turn the two word phrase into a 1200 word short story. I chose to name it after the other central character in the story. Hence the name “Stanley’s Mule”. See the “Short Stories” tab for more details.
